Cape Clear is Ireland's southernmost inhabited island and an official Gaeltacht area. Since cars are banned, you will explore the 5.2 km island on foot or by electric bus. With a population of about 110 people, the island offers a quiet look at traditional Irish life.

What are the best things to do on Cape Clear Island?

Start at the North Harbour Heritage Centre, then choose a short walking loop or explore ancient ruins.

Grab a trail map at the Heritage Centre near the main pier. Spend 30 to 45 minutes looking at the maritime exhibits and the Fastnet Rock 3D model. Afterward, walk toward the 12th-Century Church and St. Ciarán's Ruins, which takes about 30 minutes.

Which walking trail should I choose?

Choose the 4km Green Loop if you have a strict 2-hour stopover limit.

The Green Loop (Lúb na Cnoiciní) takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. The 6km Red Loop (Lúb an Ghleanna) is longer and requires more time. Both paths are waymarked. Wear comfortable hiking shoes to handle the terrain.

How do you get around Cape Clear Island?

Visitors must walk or take the local electric bus, as visitor cars are not allowed.

The electric bus meets incoming ferries at North Harbour. Tickets cost €2 to €5. The bus provides 45-minute guided tours or fast transport around the island. This is a great option if you prefer to skip a long walk.

Can I hike to Dún an Óir Promontory Fort?

You can hike to the fort, but it takes 45 minutes and involves steep, uneven terrain.

Dún an Óir is a ruined 14th-century castle located on a sea cliff. It belonged to the O'Driscoll clan. Only attempt this hike if you have sturdy walking shoes and plenty of time before your ferry leaves.
