Baltimore vs schull ferry: Which is better?

Baltimore is better for a longer sailing season and proximity to Cork City. Schull is ideal if you are already staying further west.

Baltimore ferries run from mid-April through October. This gives you more options for spring and autumn visits. The drive from Cork City to Baltimore takes 90 minutes. Schull ferries only operate during the peak summer months of June, July, and August.

How long is the boat trip from each port?

The direct boat tour takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours total from either Baltimore or Schull.

This sailing time does not include the island stopover. Most combined day tours add a 2 to 3-hour stop on Cape Clear Island. You will spend about 6 hours total on the excursion, regardless of your starting point.

Do weather cancellations affect one port more than the other?

Sailings from both ports are heavily dependent on weather and sea conditions.

Tours may be cancelled 48 to 72 hours in advance if conditions are poor. Peak summer months (June to August) offer the calmest seas. This is when Schull is operational. Baltimore's shoulder season departures face a slightly higher risk of rough seas.

Will I see Fastnet Rock the same way from both routes?

Yes, both ferries circumnavigate the 54-meter granite lighthouse.

You view the structure entirely from the water. Visitors are not permitted to land on the rock. Keep your binoculars ready in Roaring Water Bay. Dolphins often swim alongside the bow of the ferry on both routes.
